Short Video for SMBs: Where to Start Without Losing Your Days

A phone, one hour a week and a method. The four formats that work for a trade, how to shoot simply, and the batching rhythm that makes it sustainable.

Every week an SMB owner tells us the same thing: "I know I should be doing video, but I have no time, and anyway I do not know what to film." That is a perfectly reasonable answer. The trouble is that in 2026 it is also the most effective way to get seen, for free, by customers in your own region.

Let us be blunt. You do not need a studio, a camera operator, or to dance. You need a phone, one hour a week and a method. Here is how to start without it eating your days.

Why short video, and why now

The platforms push short video because it is what keeps people on them. Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook: all of them show your Reels and Shorts to people who do not even follow you yet. It is the last form of content still offering real organic reach without paying.

In practice, that means a renovation contractor in Trois-Rivières can post a 25-second video and reach 3,000 people in their region without spending a cent on advertising. A text post or a photo on its own will never get that reach today.

This is not a teenage fad. It has become the number one discovery engine, ahead of Google search for many local services. People search "how to fix" or "kitchen before and after" and land on videos. If it is not yours, it is a competitor's.

What to film when you are a services SMB

Forget "trending" content with choreography. What works for an SMB is showing what you already do every day. You have the rarest material there is: a real trade people find genuinely interesting to watch.

Four formats work every time. Showing the trade: a plumber explaining why a pipe freezes. Behind the scenes: morning on a job site, loading the truck. Before and after: the most satisfying job of the week, in two shots. And expert answers: the question a customer asks you every week, answered in 30 seconds.

Your daily routine seems ordinary to you because you live it. To a customer who knows nothing about it, watching you work is fascinating. Film what you find boring: that is often the best content.

Shoot simply, with the phone you already own

Any phone from the last five years shoots at more than good enough quality. Three things really matter: light (film facing a window or outdoors), decent sound (get closer, avoid wind), and a steady frame (rest the phone on something). That is it.

Film vertically, because that is how people hold their phone. Talk as if to a customer standing in front of you, not to a camera. The first three seconds decide whether anyone stays: open with the result or the question, not with "Hi, today I am going to talk to you about…"

For editing, TikTok's own app or the free tools on your phone are plenty. Cut the dead air, add subtitles (most people watch with the sound off), and you are done. No need for $600-a-year software.

A sustainable rhythm: batch instead of chasing

The fatal mistake is trying to film a video a day. You will last two weeks then drop the whole thing. The answer is batching: block one hour once a week and shoot four or five videos in one go. You then publish them one at a time over the following days.

One hour of filming a week gives you a month of content in four sessions. That is sustainable, even with a full calendar. Keep a note on your phone where you jot ideas down through the week, so you never turn up in front of the camera with an empty head.

To do
A well-shot video gets reused everywhere. The same vertical clip goes out as an Instagram Reel, a YouTube Short and a TikTok video, the same day. You film once, you publish three times. It is the simplest lever for multiplying your reach with no extra work.

The mistakes that make people quit

The first is wanting it to be perfect. An authentic video shot on a phone performs better than a polished production that sounds like an ad. Your customer wants to see the real you, not an actor. Publish at 80% — it is worth a thousand times more than perfection that never ships.

The second is copying what works for others: the dances, the trends with nothing to do with your trade. That will bring you no customers. The third is ignoring the first three seconds and burying the message. And the last, the most common of all: posting three videos, not going viral, and giving up. Reach is built over months, not in a week.
